About one year ago we first met Laura, when she and her colleagues held a township tour we attended. The experience of seeing a township and realising that the history still lives in the townships moved us very much. During the past year we have kept in touch with Laura, and today we joined her to volunteer.
One year ago she managed a preschool in Gugulethu (one of Cape Towns larger townships), giving 200 young children the possibility to have a better start in life. Now she has also started a small preschool with only ten children as a way of trying new pedagogical measures. To see her work is a huge inspiration for us! Our volunteering today was to cook at this smaller preschool.
If you ever visit Cape Town, we strongly suggest that you go on a township tour with Laura's competent staff. This eye opening experience is possibly the most important thing for a tourist to bring back home. After all, a lot more could have changed in this country since apartheid fell in 1994, and to facilitate the needed changes all of us have a role to play.
